The Hill of Calvary

On a hill far away stood an old rugged cross, The emblem of suffering and shame; And I love that old cross where the dearest and best For a world of lost sinners was slain.

These words from the familiar old hymn by George Bennard beautifully express the heart of every Christian. For it was through Jesus' suffering and death on the center cross that He paid for our sins, and gave believers the promise of eternal life.

During the Christmas season, this symbol reminds us that our Heavenly Father not only "cared enough to give the very best", but then hung His gift on a tree atop the hill called Calvary.

"For God so loved the world that He gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life." (John 3:16)
